According to tfl.gov.uk: "Not only did the Tube help 200,000 inner-city children escape to the country, it was also used to shelter hundreds of thousands of civilians every night during the Blitz. On 27 September 1940 a census found that a staggering 177,500 Londoners were sleeping in Tube train stations. With so many people seeking shelter in the Tube, London Underground sprang into action and installed 22,000 bunk beds, washroom facilities and even ran trains that supplied seven tonnes of food and 2,400 gallons of tea and cocoa every night. Before long there were even special stations with libraries, evening classes, movies and musical evenings."
The film states that 10 million people used public transport in London. Today, that figure stands at around 8.6 million.
The opening title cards state that this film began filming just as the London Blitz began, yet there is very little visual reference to this.
This film has been made available by the British Council Film Collection for non-commercial research and educational purposes . . The British Council Film Collection consists of 120 short documentaries made by the British Council during the 1940s designed to show the world how Britain lived, worked and played.

In 1957 when Frank Lloyd Wright was 90 years old and in New York to supervise construction of his last masterpiece, the Guggenheim Museum, Mike Wallace invited him to be a guest on The Mike Wallace Interview. Mr. Wright eagerly accepted the invitation. The initial conversation between the two proved to be so provocative and compelling that Mr. Wright was invited for a second appearance.
These two interviews are notable not only for what Mr. Wright says about his own work and about architecture in general, but also for the colorful expression of his iconoclastic views on a wide range of social and cultural topics. And in the free-wheeling give and take of these conversations Mr. Wallace succeeds in revealing some of the most telling aspects of Mr. Wright's character, showing him at once to be wise, idealistic, nonconformist, and uniquely self-confident. Rarely has a figure of such historic importance been so admiringly yet revealingly captured.

Since Frank Lloyd Wright began building Taliesin West- his winter home and school in the desert-, students have been living in canvas tents as an alternative dorm. It was direct study of nature and the land, both important elements of Wright’s organic architecture.
Today the Shelter Program has evolved and students can design and build more complicated structures (they’re given a $1000 stipend and encouraged to raise more), but the small shelters continue to be off-grid, unplumbed and often without walls. This direct contact with the desert helps students confront just what is needed to provide shelter. “To me an architect is a man who,” wrote Wright in his autobiography, “knows the secrets of nature and studies them, is informed by them and comes out stronger with knowledge.”
Stephanie Schull, director of academic affairs at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, gave us a tour of a few of the 60 odd shelters (Note: We appreciate her giving us an impromptu tour and want to make clear that the opinions she gave during the interview were her opinions and not part of any school philosophy).
